What is the cause of a urinary tract infection in baby boys?
Apr 2, 2013

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Male infants are predisposed to develop urinary tract infections (UTI) due to the following:
1- Uncircumcised male infants are 4 to 8 times more likely than circumcised male infants to contract UTI
2- If the child is born with a deformity in the anatomy in the urinary tract leading to obstruction in the urine passage
3- If they have chronic constipation (this causes the bowels to be loaded with stools so they push on the bladder and lead to urine stagnation in the bladder)
4- Vesicourethral reflux (VUR), which is the passage of the urine upwards, and this is a fairly common condition
