I think I have hyperthyroidism. What should I do to gain weight?
Nov 4, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
You need to:
A- Get examined by a physician who will look for signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism in your history of illness and on physical exam (like a goiter, or enlarged thyroid gland in the neck)
B- Get some tests done to document that you have this condition; these are called thyroid function tests and include
-Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and this is the hormone released by the pitutitary gland, a tiny pine-shaped gland that is found underneath the brain; this hormone stimulates the thyroid gland to produce hormones
-thyroxine (free T4) and maybe also T3 (these are the hormones secreted by the thyroid gland)
You may also require an ultrasound or scan of the thyroid gland to rule out the presence of a thyroid nodule that may secreting extra hormones.
The correct treatment will be determined according to the findings on those tests.
