I hadn't heard of the link between artificial sweeteners and arthritis. Can you suggest some websites for further reading that don't look like they were put together by the tin foil hat brigade.

There had many researches that suggests a link between aspartame or artificial sweetners and joint pain ,in limited use there was no effect but using in as a routine with moderate to high intake shows a higher risk of developing a joint pain,when people consuming up to eight packets of the chemical per day and having joint pain after they stop the artificial sweetner ,there was a reduction in the symptoms .
aspartame use can result in an accumulation of formaldehyde in the brain because it is absorbed by your body. This can result in damage to your central nervous and immune systems and thus pain ,most joint pain may have similar pain mechanisms
