What are the side effects of taking the pill and does it really help with period pain?
Jan 7, 2013

Dr. Karim Nawfal Obstetrics & Gynecology
There are no major side effects to taking the oral contraceptive pills.
The minor side effects like fluid retention, irritability etc.. depend on the type of oral contraceptives or the patient herself and most of the time changing the type of the pill can resolve them.
However some patients have conditions that are a contra indications to oral contraceptive pills
So every women should be assessed by her gynecologist for any of these conditions before she starts taking the pills.

The pills do help with period pain , because although you will still have menses you will not be ovulating so your dysmenorrhea ( menstrual pain) will decrease.
