My knees hurt in the cold and when I sit for a long while. Why is that?
Jan 7, 2013

Dr. Bernard Hojaili Rheumatology
It depends on your age and on the association with any other symptoms. If the pain is localized only to the knees and the pain is mainly when they are bent, then probably it is the knee cap (sabouneh) or in other terms patellofemoral syndrome. Sometimes, the menisci (soft tissues in the knees) can cause similar pain.
If you have symptoms in other joints, mainly hands and feet and especially in the early hours of the morning, then it is probably rheumatism and labs and xrays need to be done. Either-way the treatment has to start very soon before the permanent damage starts.
If your case is closer to the first scenario, then contact an orthopedic surgeon, if your case is close to the second one, contact a rheumatologist.
