Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
If you have allergies in the nose (allergic rhinitis), this renders the inner nose linings to be almost constantly inflamed, dry, and consequently easily friable. Hot weather and dry cold air from the AC induce these inner linings to dry up and crack open, so the small blood vessels (capillaries or venules) running underneath will ooze blood.
Since avoiding the heat or AC is not an option, I advise you to use nasal saline solution (like Nasocleanse, Sterimar or Physiomer) daily, in addition to applying a very thin layer of Vaseline petrolatum jelly (using a cotton tip, pick a small amount and apply it gently in a circular motion). This will help keep the inner nose membrane moist.
If you're known to have seasonal allergies, nasal steroid sprays (Nasonex, Avamys etc.) and oral anti histamines (Zyrtec, Aerius or others) are necessary but may worsen the nose dryness, so you should use them while making sure your nose remains well moisturized as indicated above.
