We usually resort to beta blockers, but only after thorough assessment: we take a detailed history including family history of heart disease, exercise tolerance, caffeine intake, smoking habits, then do a physical exam and listen to the heart and do a full heart tracing (echocardiogram or ECG) to make sure that the heart rhythm is right (what we call sinus rhythm) and that there are no extra or premature heart beats.

It is recommended that all individuals see a Family Doctor for a full medical examination annually. Adults should get their blood pressure checked (US Preventive Task Force), a flu vaccine (CDC) and more each year.
