Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Irregular menstrual bleeding, especially when it occurs in between menstrual cycles, is known as metrorrhagia, and should be evaluated by a gynecologist or an endocrinologist to find out the underlying cause. Common causes include hormonal imbalances (as in the case of polycystic ovary syndrome or تكيس المبيض), a fibroid (benign growth) in the uterus, dysfunctional uterine bleeding (abnormal bleeding with no organic abnormalities in the uterus, usually associated with hormonal disturbances), or a bleeding tendency (for example, in the case of low number of platelets, or platelets that do not function properly). Your doctor will probably order an ultrasound of the uterus in addition to levels of sex hormones in the blood.
