Hello Drs, can an ovarian cyst be removed by taking medicines, or it requires a surgery? (23 years old)
Apr 27, 2013

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Ovarian cysts are common and, if they measure 5-6 cm in diameter and have a benign appearance, they are followed-up by serial ultrasounds. Oral contraceptives have not proven to be superior to simple observation, they are however useful in preventing new cysts from appearing. If a cyst (simple or complex) is larger than 5-10 cm, causing symptoms, or persists through 3 menstrual cycles then surgery should be seriously considered.
