If you have genital herpes, what risks are there to your unborn baby?
Jan 7, 2013

Dr. Karim Nawfal Obstetrics & Gynecology
If you have a history of genital herpes you should inform your obstetrician.

Having active herpes lesions when you go in labor has a 3% risk of transmission to your baby , so a Cesarean section is recommended to prevent that.

If you have a history of genital herpes , a medication will be prescribed to you when you reach 36 weeks of gestation (start of your 9th month) until you deliver, to suppress the virus and decrease the risks of having lesions at the time of delivery.
